The NYPD is hiring an experienced attorney to serve as a Director within the Domestic Violence Unit, within the Office of the Chief of Department. The NYPD DVU spearheads the Department’s development of domestic violence policy, operations, and program implementation, and ensures these officers have the tools to perform this critical mission. Overseeing a team of uniformed and civilian staff, and working in conjunction with a uniformed Commanding Officer, the Director will:
- Ensure that all members of service receive the most up-to-date trainings and best practices surrounding response and investigation of domestic violence offenses
- Liaise with advocacy groups and survivors to gather feedback on the Department’s services, and help shape new programming
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to enhance Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention through community advocacy
- Collaborate with legislators, advocacy organizations, survivors, and service providers to inform and advance legislative and policy goals aimed at preventing domestic violence and strengthening intervention mechanisms
- Coordinate various reporting on Domestic Violence statistics and programs, including those mandated by New York State, New York City and other governing bodies
- Participate in review of U Visa applications related to being a victim of domestic violence, stalking and other sexually-related crimes
- Work closely with the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence to support citywide domestic violence prevention and awareness

At the direction of the Commanding Officer, the Director will also represent the License Division at Department executive meetings as well as external meetings with city, state, and federal agencies on matters related to the Division.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This position requires an attorney with a license to practice law in the State of New York, and at least 7 years of recent full-time responsible, relevant legal experience, subsequent to admission to the Bar. Prior experience should include significant litigation experience in constitutional and criminal issues. The candidate should also have familiarity with Department policies and operations, through knowledge of legal strategies and methodologies and outstanding written and verbal skills.
